The Magic of NZ Made Cranfields Blog

The magic of New Zealand made

We have a hundred small retail choices to make every time we step into a store or browse online.

And they range from where we shop, to how we pay for our goods, if we take the blue or the green, to whether we accept a bag.

Another decision we frequently make is when, and where we choose to buy New Zealand made.

At Cranfields, we discover some of our best finds right here in New Zealand – thoughtful,  sustainable, responsibly realised ranges. And each time you select something from one of them, a designer, maker or craftsperson who treads the same earth as us, breathes the same air, and might have even gone to the same school,  makes a little money (and does a little happy dance. Probably…)

We’re pretty selective about the ranges we stock here at Cranfields so when you shop with us, you can be certain we’ve met the makers, assessed the quality of their product, seen how they work, we believe in their art and we think it’s worth sharing with the world.

Take, for example, The Woodsmith timber collection cutting boards, oak wine barrel platters, shelving, stools and tables; these are made by timber artisans who love what they do, creating heirloom pieces in small quantities that will become treasured items in your home. We’ve enjoyed a 20 year working relationship with The Woodsmith, and implicitly trust their beautiful product and superb finishing.  If you take a shine to a Woodsmith piece, you’d better snap it up quickly though, as their production rules aren’t dictated by supply and demand, rather they only create pieces according to what their muse dictates.

We have stunning jewellery from local makers like Neil Adcock (exceptionally rare, unusually beautiful kauri gum and smooth pounamu) and Zoe Porter, who trained at the London Jewellery School and now makes her graceful pieces in Wellington. She creates her work using traditional tools, environmentally friendly processes and quality materials.

And there’s fun stuff, like Munro God Socks & Jocks, made locally (and colourfully) from super comfy, stretchy cotton spandex – the perfect fabric for housing God’s gifts.

No matter which wonderful New Zealand made item you decide on, know that we will always insist on beautiful craftsmanship, smart design, and quality materials.
